In a joint venture with the University of Delaware, The Delaware Contemporary is pleased to announce the 2018 Master of Fine Arts Solo exhibition, Evidence of Light Reverberating, by recipient Lisa Bennett.
Bennett’s photographic works reflect her contemplative encounters with light. In the studio, she manipulates materials, such as paper and plastic, to create intuitive compositions of ethereal light with minimal use of shape. The resulting photographs reveal traces of her actions of cutting and arranging paper or other materials. She overlaps, bends, roughly cuts, scratches, and tears the paper allowing the resulting actions to remain in focus when photographed.
Bennett’s work creates a visual experience from a distance and invites the viewer to come closer to understand the materiality and surface. Her photographs allow for shifts in perception between representation and abstraction of forms, documentation, and visual experience. Illusions persist through revealing and concealing the artist’s hand: things don’t always appear as they seem at first glance.
